With its astounding physical location intertwined with the need to synchronously celebrate the past while embracing progressive sustainability, The Butte Heritage Center project presented Place Architecture with a distinct iconic architecture challenge.  As a focal point for the entire region, this science and technology center encompasses community park areas, a museum, educational space and a community memorial. Cantilevered high above the waters of the Berkley Pit mine, the placement of the Center itself draws the eye back to the core of this unique site.

Every component of the project is steeped in a sense of sustainability, procuring Platinum LEED approval and striving for all possible 69 credits.  The 60 million dollar project brought together local and national agencies as well as private entities to achieve the project vision.  Place collaborated with independent consultants across the nation to ensure the success of the project’s sustainability goals.

The final design is an extraordinary tribute that fully utilizes the unique site and project requirements.  In a vibrant collaborative effort, the Heritage Center design is an extraordinary celebration of Butte’s history and its residents, along with representing the true nature of iconic architecture.
