This ranch complex was conceptualized and developed through a collaborative process involving the owners, contractor, architect, and several historical experts. The Collaborative Workshop provided strong themes for the design which reflects relationships of the buildings to each other and the landscape. Due to its location in the historic Alder Gulch near the Territorial Capitol of Montana, historical issues were also of paramount importance.
The ranch complex was constructed with concern for quality, historical appropriateness, and detail. Its success is reflected in the delicate balance of historical themes, functional requirements, building placement, and landscaping. Details such as hand-hewn logs, heavy timber framing, and use of salvaged antique barn board tie the buildings of the ranch to its historical and natural surroundings, creating a true sense of “homestead.”
