After a 1990 fire, these long time Bozeman Area residents needed to replace their family home. Because many objects of great meaning were lost in the house fire, this new home had to include the client in the design process in order to create the depth of meaning necessary to make thier new house a home. Although some of the family members had grown and left home, they were to be included in the design process. Dramatic views of the Gallatin Valley and Bridger Mountain Range created both a major design theme and a palete of materials to be referred to throughout the project. Large outcroppings of natural stone and the edge of a large timber stand suggested both the stone and wood use. After an intensive collaborate design effort, a central theme was born that suggested cedar as the natural choice to reflect both the scale and feeling of the site and its surroundings. Arches cut into very large pieces of cedar seem to best express the true nature and beauty of this material. Arches over the garage area are the owner's gate for daily entry into their home. Large arched beams, 14" x 14" clear cedar columns, and 12" tapered siding express the strength of the cedar and allow the owners to appreciate the significant nature of the material.
This residence won a 1993 Design Award from the Northwest and Pacific Region, American Institute of Architects.
