In 2007, the clients found this Gallatin River site while fly-fishing. They came to Place Architecture with an idea for a home that embodied that moment of discovery and celebrated their love of the river’s simple pleasures.

Place walked them through the process of materializing the 3,875 square foot plan for that practical and simple but elegant synthesis. The kitchen, living and dining room blend together with in a unified space surrounded by glass doors, which expand the open feel with their Gallatin River and Bridger views. Opening the doors in the summer blurs the line between indoors and outdoors.

Concrete terraces cascade down to the river voicing an invitation to head out for the day or enjoy the cool of the evening. Reaching out into the site, the terraces also create additional outdoor rooms, expanding the home’s presence and serving as a transition area from interior space to the natural world. Further emphasizing that transition and enhancing the views, the house itself is deliberately elevated in relation to the surrounding ground plane.

A separate media room adjacent to the guest wing offers additional indoor entertaining space, and each bedroom has its own private outdoor terrace. But, the large built-in storage closets for fishing gear pay homage to the clients’ most treasured leisure activity. A sauna at the north end of the site completes this modern Montana retreat.
