The Livingston Library is approximately a 5000 square foot addition to the existing Carnegie Library in downtown Livingston. Construction on the addition was completed in 2005. The design expands the stacks and reading areas, as well as provides much needed community meeting spaces.

A main feature of the new space is a 20 foot by 40 foot skylight which lets natural light into the reading and stack areas. Exposed structural elements through the skylight opening will act as light baffles, diffusing the natural light as well as provide a place for artificial lights to be mounted for use at night.

From the exterior the new form re-uses the size and repetition of openings from the Carnegie building to help connect the new and old with a common scale. However, the new distinguishes itself from the old by reflecting the changing construction methods and materials with the use of glass, concrete, and steel. This will allow the identity of the original historic Carnegie building to remain intact, while at the same time create a new recognizable civic space for downtown Livingston.
