This home was designed to maximize the stunning views of the Yellowstone River as it winds through the Paradise Valley, to protect the interior from northerly winds and to provide privacy from the nearby road.
The structure is nestled into the hillside and presents a solid, protective, rustic board-on-board wall to the north. Wing walls sheathed in contrasting corrugated galvanized metal siding break through the massive plane of the north wall to open up views from the interior to the northeast mountains. The detached garage provides further protection from the road and creates a small, private yard in the midst of the expansive landscape.
The Great Room is opened to the vista with 50 linear feet of tall aluminum storefront windows to the west and south. The roof soars upwards toward the valley to enhance the experience of the building opening up to the sky and mountains and inviting the outdoor experience to the inside. The deck opens to the west, sited at the edge of the cliff. The experience of the ground dropping away while the deck expands and the roof soars creates the sense of lofty flight into the natural world.
Custom designed maple closets, a deep light shelf above the tall windows, and exposed wood beams in the Great Room all distinguish the interior. The walls are sensitively angled to provide natural light and views while maintaining privacy and, in the hallway, to provide a forced perspective, lengthening the expansive experience of space.
